This is probably what the trout fish will be saying to themselves every time you get the trout fishing bait all wrong. While they may be voracious feeders and even have the predatory/cannibalistic instincts, trout fish can just simply ignore whatever bait you use. Here are some common reasons:

Every angler must always use bait that best mimics the natural prey. This means that lures and flies must bear a striking resemblance to fish’s food or natural prey or they will be ignored. Trout fish can see in color so it is always recommended that one should use colored bait because of the good visibility in water that they posses.

Trout fish eat a variety of food throughout the year. This is simply because some of their naturally occurring prey may not be available throughout the year and as result, they make do with what is available. Luckily, and as is normally the case in all food chains, they will have food throughout the year. If you use bait that is not what they are currently feeding on, chances are that it may be ignored.

There are anglers that also employ rough techniques when casting and as a result, the bait may appear unnatural to the fish. It is best to use the best techniques with whatever bait that one is using. Note that trout fish have a great vision and are quite intelligent.

Night crawlers, insects and insect larva, and worms are a favorite meal for trout fish. These are usually the best when one is considering the use of live bait. They are quite inexpensive and can be found in any tackle shops and bait shops. Though they are a disadvantage if one wishes to cast for distance, hellgrammites are quite irresistible to nearly all the fish species. They are a type of insect larva. Minnows and crayfish tend to be popular with seasoned fishermen who intend to snag a trophy trout. Others still make use of pieces of sucker meat or cheese. Crickets, maggots, grasshoppers, and meal worms are also some of the favorite fish meals. They can be quite effective if that is what they are feeding on at the moment.

As an angler your trout fishing bait should not only be limited to live bait. In fact, it is increasingly becoming an acceptable fact that synthetic bait is more effective than live bait. With synthetic bait, there is now wide range of colors, sizes, and types to choose from depending with the nature of the of the water body you are going to be fishing in. Top on the list of many anglers’ list are spinners, nymphs, flat-fish, spoons, and flies. Power-bait will also feature a lot in many an angler’s list as it is able to entice and drive trout fish to take a bite because of the natural scents and flavors.
