Did you know that it is possible to grow healthy tomatoes in containers? Yes it is possible. Tomatoes are easy to grow successfully in containers just the way you would in an outdoor garden.

There are numerous advantages in growing container tomatoes. For starters it negates the need for an outdoor garden. For those without space for an outdoor garden it is ideal since the potted plants can be kept anywhere so long as they have adequate access to sunlight for about six hours or more a day.

You can put the plants on patios, window sills or even yards. Other advantages include saving time that would have been used for weeding. Furthermore the pots can be moved and rotated around the house so as to give them access to vital sun rays.

Almost all varieties of tomatoes can be grown in containers successfully, though some are more adaptable to containers than others.

Choose a variety of tomatoes that don’t grow so big. Determinate tomatoes are the most ideal since they seldom grow to a big size. They normally grow to about 1.5 to 2 feet.

Also, growing tomatoes in containers causes them to ripen almost simultaneously , unless of course you have planted them in phases. It's easy to find yourself in a position of having too many tomatoes and not knowing what to do with them.

Some tomato varieties thrive on an abundant water supply, so it is wise to grow a variety that does not need too much water. Tomatoes need just about an inch of water per week to keep the soil moist in an outdoor garden, but in a pot, maintaining soil moisture can be a daunting challenge.

This can be solved by using a terra cotta pot with enough room so that the tomato plant can thrive. The pot should also have holes underneath it for adequate drainage.

Adding a rock at the bottom of the container enhances the drainage system and helps protect the plant from contracting diseases such as root rot. To maintain soil moisture, you can use a mixture of sphagnum peat, vermiculite and perlite.

To this mixture you can periodically add fertilizer with a space of about two to four weeks. Normally, tomato plants tend to be ravenous feeders so it is wise to add slow acting fertilizer to the mix, this will ensure the plants have enough nutrients through out the growing period.

It is a joy to grow your own tomatoes and it saves you among other things, the numerous visits to the local market, furthermore it brings joy to apartment dwellers and anyone who might not have a yard space for a garden and enables them to enjoy the same benefits as those with outdoor gardens.
