White river trout fishing is always an exciting experience both for the skilled or unskilled trout fisherman. The rush of the swollen high seas during the wet season is exhilarating against breathtaking landscape. Many a fisherman just cannot wait for winter to be over, for the fish to start biting!

For a great white river trout fishing time, you will need to:

• Know the season – Trout are seasonal creatures, given to changing their behavior with change in season. Depending on the trout species, trout spawn at different times, for instance the rainbow trout spawns in late spring and early summer as the temperatures rise. Brown trout on the other hand spawn in autumn, while the lake trout is well known to spawn only at night in the fall. Fishing during spawning periods is amazing as the trout even change colour. Preparation for spawning also means a change in location for most trout species, moving from streams to larger water bodies like lakes or moving upstream.
Trout also change their biting patterns with change in season. When the waters are high, the fish tend to hug the shorelines, so it would be wiser to fish nearer the shore than further out. You may also want to do surface fishing, as most of the fish are in higher levels of water. The highly active fish is looking for some good prey and the best angling methods to use at this time involve dipping the lure for the fish to see then causing it to move quickly away. If the lure stays too long, the observant fish will know you are up to something.

Lower temperatures and low waters cause trout to be very lethargic, and their biting becomes very poor. At this time, you may want to employ lures that the fish love and occur naturally in their environment. This can also be found in fishing supply shops in the area in perfect replicas of the real. Furthermore use a dead-drift angling technique: let your lure drift very slowly, so that the lazy fish are encouraged to bite.

• Understand the food the trout in the area go for – Most white water trout like to feed on aquatic insects like prolific scud and sow bug, snails, mayfly nymphs, larvae and little crayfish. If you are not able to get some live bait, go for reproductions of this in the fishing supply shops in the area. This way, you’ll catch trout quickly and get to keep your bait for future use.
The white rivers of the world, be it in South Africa or America, promise lots of brown, brook trout and cutthroat trout. Dress warm though, preferably in layers that you can gently remove when its hotter. This way you wont rock the boat too much and you’ll get your choicest trout yet!
